“Just get OUT!”

The words echoed in Korra’s head, made that much sharper by the panic and pain in Asami’s voice. All the pull and power of the Avatar meant nothing in that moment as the nurses finally manhandled Korra from the room.

She doesn’t want me here. The thought bubbled up from the deepest recesses of her mind, colliding with the memory of Asami’s face gone pale from distress, head thrown back and eyes clenched tight against sweat and rebellious locks of hair.

The door to the hospital room had been slammed shut, but Korra could still hear the agonized screams from her spot beside the door, back against the adjoining wall and knees pulled to her chest with shaking arms.

She doesn’t want me here. The words took on a physical aspect so oppressive that Korra didn’t realize Asami had quieted until a new presence vocalized its discomfort, and Korra was on her feet and metalbending the door open before she was consciously aware of her own legs moving beneath her. Immediately the two nurses that had previously forced her out were blocking her path, and Korra shocked herself when she began seriously considering trying to bloodbend through the human barricade, but then Asami spoke again and pulled Korra’s focus like a blast of lightning.

“It’s alright, please,” she called out weakly, and Korra felt her heart skip a beat at the smile on her love’s face. It was tired and cracked at the corners, but it was her smile – the smile Asami wore for her and her alone.

“Are you sure?” Korra whispered, her hand trembling as she pushed sweat-soaked clumps of tangled hair back from Asami’s still-too-pale face, having once more moved without knowing. “I just- I thought I heard…”

“You did,” another voice spoke up, though it took Asami struggling to look past her to make the Avatar turn toward the doctor. But she was so glad she did.

The doctor became background, blurred out behind the bundle of pink swaddling wrapped snugly to frame the tiniest, most beautiful face Korra had ever seen.

“Avatar Korra, Lady Sato,” the doctor spoke again, “would you like to hold your daughter?”
