The Equestrian Mutation: Prologue

Princess Celestia, goddess and co-ruler of the land of Equestria, stood upon the mane court balcony as she set the sun upon its daily course. As gravity took over, the princess found herself weary to face her court duties. She knew, of course, that if she informed her little ponies of her desire to rest, they would understand and wish her a pleasant day off. Sighing, Celestia pulled out a smile and turned to take her throne and face her court. After all, her reasons for feeling so worn out were the exact same reasons she could not afford to rest. So many strange reports....

Princess Celestia had been alive for a very long time and had seen many incredible things, but the reports flooding in now were laced with so much fear and malice that she was constantly reminded of the Full Moon Riots following the lunar banishment of Nightmare Moon. Much as was the case all those years ago, Celestia felt more fear for the lives of those being reported than of the 'concerned citizens' that waited to speak with her.

As she took her throne, her hoof raised to motion for the day's schedule to begin, an older gray Earth pony barged through the entrance with a guard close on his tail. Just as he came to kneel before her, the guard latched onto the older stallion's tail and began pulling him back as two other guards came in to assist.

"Our apologies, Your Highness," stated one guard. "He was told repeatedly to wait in line-"

"I have no time!" The stallion struggled against the guards' hooves. "Princess, please, I have to speak with you about my daughter! It's urgent!"

"That is enough," Celestia stated, bringing the frantic motions of those before her to an immediate halt. Nodding to the guards, Celestia tried to maintain her smile as the stallion returned to kneel before her throne. Taking note of his Cutie Mark, a pair of reading glasses set atop a blackboard, she felt her smile become more genuine. "Professor Greymane, I'm surprised to see you off campus at this time of day. What has happened to Greymare to cause such commotion?" Suddenly, the professor seemed afraid to speak.

"I'm sorry, Your Highness, truly I am. I know my actions today go against all manner of policy and protocol, and if you feel it necessary to have me removed from my department at the Canterlot University of Social Sciences, I will step down gracefully. It's just...my daughter..." Celestia frowned as the stallion floundered, his gaze jumping from his hooves before him to the hall's entrance.

"Is she here, Professor?" At his meek nod, Celestia sent a guard to collect the stallion's family. "Now tell me, what manner of sickness does she have?"

"I- I don't know. I'm not sure it is a sickness, it's just..." Greymane hesitated, wringing his hooves in worry. "She's been...levitating things, Your Highness. In her sleep, usually, and she wakes up screaming and frightened. She knows she's doing it, but she can't seem to control it."

Princess Celestia started to sigh in relief. An untrained unicorn was no cause for panic, and she wondered at the kindest way to relay this to the Earth pony. The words died in her throat, though, as the guard returned with a maroon-colored mare and her fire-red filly. It had always tickled her that Greymane had named his bright red filly Greymare, but his family's appearance now brought to mind something Celestia had simply forgot: the professor's wife and child were both Earth ponies. Little Greymare, shifting her hooves and  tail-swatting her blank flanks nervously, had developed the ability to lift things with her mind without a horn for magic. The princess closed her eyes, her mind on instant replay of the last reports she'd received.
-
An orphanage in Manehattan lost its roof in an explosion reportedly caused by an Earth colt's eyes.
-
A juvenile Zebra pegasus, all but unheard of these days, had accidentally shocked herself while calling down lightening to escape from market police in Fillydelphia.
-
A unicorn colt froze an entire fountain by touching it with his hoof, dispelling no magic from his horn.
-
The wild rumors coming in of a stallion from the northern lands with no past, no Cutie Mark, and, most disturbingly, retractable claws.
-
Princess Celestia opened her eyes, taking in the now-scared filly and her worried parents. Making a decision, she smiled softly at Greymare.

"Don't fear, my little pony. You've caused no harm and earned no retaliation. You simply need guidance from somepony with a better understanding of what you're going through. On that note," Celestia paused and turned to the court scribe. "Short Hoof, please send a summons to the University of West Manehattan. I must speak with the Head of Pony Biology, Professor Charles Xafur, as soon as ponily possible."

Equestria is ever-changing, and its pony inhabitants with it. Now some ponies seem to be changing faster than the world around them. How will the rulers react to the outpouring of fear from those ponies who remain the same?
